Celebrating the life of
Whitfield Evans Mallory
May 10, 1930 - February 24, 2013
Whitfield Evans Mallory, born May 10, 1930, in Windsor, North Carolina passed peacefully on February 24, 2013.
Whit is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, the former Eleanor Emmart, son James Brantley Mallory Carolyn, daughter Nancy Lynn Mallory, grandchildren Nathaniel James, Ryan Brantley, and Kevin Scott Mallory, Julia Rose and William Steven Blank, and sister Pat Wood, sister-in-law Matina Mallory, and brothers-in-law Clyde William Emmart and J.D. Emmart. He was predeceased by son Steven Whitfield, parents James Brantley and Bessie Whitfield Mallory, and siblings James Brantley Mallory infant, Cecil Benjamin Edwards infant, Hazel Edwards Leicester, Ellis Edwards, Harry Brantley Mallory, Earl Edwards, and Susie Edwards White.
Whit was graduated from Robersonville H.S. in North Carolina, was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as an artillery instructor during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Army in January, 1954, he took the bus to Washington, D.C., carrying only his duffle bag to enroll in business school.
Whit received his accounting degree from Strayer Business College in 1954, where he met Eleanor, and then he began his career as a Certified Public Accountant; he distinguished himself by serving numerous nonprofit and labor organizations. He retired in 1991 as managing partner of Thomas Havey & Co. in Washington, and he and Eleanor retired to Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia, in July, 1992.
He was known for traveling to visit his extended family, particularly his five grandchildren. He enjoyed golf, gardening, playing cards, sitting on the beach, tinkering in the garage, and watching western movies. Most of all, Whit poured his passion into his life's work with Civitan International, working tirelessly as a volunteer from 1968-2013 for the benefit of mentally and physically challenged children. He served in many capacities, including club president, district governor, and VP of Civitan International.
Whit concentrated his effort in service to Civitan's Chesapeake District Foundation for Mentally Retarded and Handicapped Children, helping to raise and manage millions of dollars for the organization. The Foundation funds medical research at the UAB Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Whit received the Civitan International Honor Key and the Chesapeake District Civitan Lifetime Achievement Award.
Family and friends will long remember Whit as a man who never met a stranger, loved to laugh, and cherished those close to him. He appreciated Eleanor's constant care for him in his later years, and his strength during his illness inspired others.
Whit and Eleanor have felt so supported by their church family at Skidaway Island United Methodist and the family wishes to thank Drs. Elizalde, Lorenz, and Remler, and the staffs of Memorial and Candler Hospitals, Savannah Square, and Hospice House Savannah for the compassionate care Whit has received over the years.
A memorial service will be held at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church on Friday March 1, at 11 am. Remembrances can be entered at www.foxandweeks.com. Inurnment will be at a later date at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Silver Spring, MD.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Foundation for Mentally Retarded Children, c/o Douglas Potter, 401 Washington Ave., Suite 402, Baltimore, MD 21204
